Abstract:

Within the last years a partial or complete reconstruction and modernization have been effected in most sawmills in Yugoslavia. In some sawmills neither mechanization nor the organization of log and sawn timber storaging have been completed. Because of high handling and transport costs of logs and sawn timber, it is a pressing need to complete these works. The most current problem of sawmills in Yugoslavia today is a regular supply of logs to the sawmills. Most sawmills have organized their work in two shifts, however the raw material base of some regions provides insufficient quantity of logs causing disturbance in sawmill operations. Another serious problem is sawing of beech logs from winter felling. Because of adverse weather conditions during winter months a large quantity of beach logs is delivered to the sawmills from April to July influencing on a large scale organization of work, quality of sawing and efficiency of sawmill business operations.
